Korea University’s College of Liberal Arts Marks 80th Anniversary With Talks, Films and Exhibitions

Korea University’s College of Liberal Arts will mark its 80th anniversary with more than two weeks of talks, screenings, exhibitions and academic events from Sept. 1 to 17.

The centerpiece, the “Humanities 80 Talk Show,” will run from Sept. 7 to 10 at the college’s West Building. Each session will explore how creative work is made. Director Chung Ji-young will discuss film production, while critic Lim Jin-mo and producer Jinu will examine how K-pop is produced. Cultural psychologist Kim Jung-woon will speak on the human mind in the age of artificial intelligence, and Lee Hyun-sook of the National Museum of Korea will discuss exhibition planning.

The official anniversary ceremony on Sept. 11 will include awards for the “Humanities 80 Essay Contest,” a band performance and a conversation among professors Kang Je-hoon, Myung Soon-koo and Lee Seung-eun about the college’s past, present and next 100 years.

Other events include a discussion with filmmaker Jang Hang-jun and executive Lim Eun-jung on how stories become films. A screening of the documentary “In the Sea of Strange Thoughts,” about Korea University emeritus professor Kim Woo-chang, will be followed by a discussion with director Choi Jeong-dan and Professor Lee Sang-woo. The film won two awards in the documentary competition at the 48th Moscow International Film Festival.

The academic program features the Kim Jun-yup Lecture, an international conference commemorating independence activist Kim Jun-yup, and an anniversary conference with a keynote speech by Kim Hyun, emeritus professor at the Academy of Korean Studies. A permanent exhibition at the university library will present representative translations from the college’s departments.

A college representative said the anniversary would explore the practical value and possibilities of the humanities as they engage with the public in a rapidly changing media and technology environment.
