Kortemark mayor to undergo another neck operation and take a break

Karolien Damman, the CD&V mayor of Kortemark, will step away from her duties from mid-October to undergo another neck operation. She says last year’s surgery did not succeed and has left her in constant pain.

“Last week, the final decision was made that I need another operation,” Damman said. She added that the level beneath the original surgical site had also become severely damaged, causing pain and discomfort over the past year.

Damman said she does not know exactly what caused the problems. “I can only guess at the cause: did I not take enough time to recover? Did the stress and long days take too heavy a toll? Do I have bad genes, or was it simply bad luck?”

She plans to take enough rest this time in the hope of making a full recovery. It remains unclear who will replace her while she is away.
