Kosovo assembly session scheduled to resume on Sept. 9

Kosovo’s constitutive assembly session will resume on Sept. 9 at 11 a.m., its chair Avni Dehari announced.

Dehari, a lawmaker from Vetëvendosje, said the agreement between his party and the Democratic League of Kosovo was good news. He acknowledged that it was still unclear whether enough lawmakers supported forming all the institutions, but said he had decided to schedule the session’s continuation.

As chair of the constitutive session, I saw the agreement between Vetëvendosje and the Democratic League of Kosovo as good news.

He said he expected the agreement to be followed by “concrete responsibility and readiness” from lawmakers to fulfill their constitutional duties. “Kosovo does not need another postponement, another crisis, and even less a new election process,” Dehari wrote on Facebook.

The constitutional deadline for constituting the assembly expired on Aug. 7. The last session on the issue took place the following day, and no continuation had been scheduled since then. Under their agreement, the Democratic League and Vetëvendosje backed university professor Bekim Sejdiu as a joint candidate for assembly president. Six Democratic League lawmakers, Avdullah Hoti, Hikmete Bajrami, Kujtim Shala, Janina Jmeri, Armend Zemaj and Arben Gashi, opposed the agreement.
