KPK explains why two deputy heads were removed from police press conference

A planned press conference at the Jakarta Metropolitan Police on Friday night regarding a corruption case took an unexpected turn when two senior officials from Indonesia's Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) were removed just before it commenced.

KPK Deputy for Enforcement and Execution, Asep Guntur Rahayu, clarified the situation, stating that he and Deputy for Coordination and Supervision, Ely Kusumastuti, were present following an official invitation from the police. The invitation, extended on Friday morning, requested their attendance to discuss the KPK's authority in coordinating and supervising cases handled by other law enforcement agencies, as per relevant laws.

Rahayu stated that he and Deputy Kusumastuti engaged in discussions with police investigators about the coordination and supervision of a particular case. He emphasized that decisions regarding case takeovers are not made unilaterally but require adherence to procedures and respect for the efforts of all law enforcement bodies, including the police and the Attorney General's Office.

Ultimately, an agreement was reached that the KPK's formal explanation was not required for the police's press conference that evening. Consequently, the nameplates for the two KPK deputies were removed from the press conference table before it officially began. Rahayu indicated that the discussions were still in the initial stages.
