Kragujevac's 'sea' remains closed: Swimming season begins amid neglect at Šumarice Lake

Kragujevac's Šumarice Lake, once a popular destination, faces a neglected state despite the official opening of its swimming season on July 24. Visitors are greeted by a sign stating "Beach is closed. Swimming at your own risk," creating a confusing situation given the official declaration.

City administration claims the season has begun with organized rescue services, including a lifeguard present based on swimmer numbers and weather conditions. They assert that water quality is regularly checked and currently suitable for swimming. However, the Institute for Public Health, responsible for water testing, stated that the latest completed tests were from June 29. These tests indicated the water is in category II bacteriologically and category III chemically, with higher organic matter and lower oxygen levels. Swimmers are advised to avoid swallowing the water and to shower afterward.

Visitors at the lake noted that while showers are functional, the overall condition of the bathing area is poor. "It needs more tidying up. More attention should be paid to it, some more amenities, and a bit more tidying. This lake really lacks that, and then more people will come," one visitor commented. Another suggested improvements for children and adults, while a third implied potential hidden motives for the neglect, possibly to drive people to swimming pools.

Opposition councilor Boris Kovačević of Šumadija Block 21 criticized the situation, calling it a "huge wasteland" and a "devastation of the city's resources." He stated that promises of a "Kragujevac sea" and major reconstruction are made annually solely for political marketing, with little tangible improvement following.

There are no hidden intentions, just irresponsible work by those in charge.

The season was officially marked by the placement of buoys in only one section of the lake designated for swimming. However, the area suffers from unkempt vegetation, a lack of beach furniture, a non-functional toilet, and a broken zip line.

Every year 'Kragujevac sea' is announced, a big beach, a big reconstruction. The announcements serve their purpose, they are solely for daily political marketing, after which we see what remains - a huge wasteland and resources that the city of Kragujevac has are completely devastated.
