KRC Genk opens new season with well-attended fan day: 'We want to go for prizes this season'

KRC Genk kicked off its new season with a bustling fan day at the Cegeka Arena, drawing supporters eager to connect with their favorite players and gear up for the upcoming matches. The event, a yearly tradition, featured a range of activities, including opportunities to purchase the latest team jerseys and collect autographs from club idols.

Fans like Jimmy, who attended with his family, highlighted the club's welcoming atmosphere. "You notice that it really is a family club," he said, enjoying the festive mood enhanced by good weather. For young supporters like 11-year-old Nout, meeting players such as Daan Heymans was a major draw. "I really want an autograph from Daan Heymans, he is my idol," Nout shared.

Verdediger Matte Smets acknowledged the fans' support, noting their wishes for success in the new season and the upcoming gala match. "It's always great to meet the fans," Smets commented. "When they say something to me, they mostly wish me a lot of success in the season and for the gala match." He also found joy in interacting with younger fans during autograph sessions, observing their excitement.

The day also included a stadium tour, which left a strong impression on attendees. "When you walk out of the catacombs and see the field and the stadium, it's fantastic," said fan Jimmy after the tour. The event culminated in a friendly match against Dutch club FC Twente, giving supporters a glimpse of the team's potential.

Despite the team not reaching the Champions Play-Offs last season and facing a recent coaching change and the potential departure of player Kos Karetsas, the mood among fans remains optimistic. Some, like Toby, expect at least a top-three finish, while Jimmy believes the team should aim for the championship. Smets echoed the ambition, stating, "We are only competing in 2 competitions this year: the Pro League and the Croky Cup. We definitely want to go for the prizes this season."
