Kremlin Criticizes Finnish President Over Support for Ukraine Attacks on Russia

The Kremlin has sharply criticized Finnish President Alexander Stubb for his remarks endorsing Ukrainian strikes on Russian territory, labeling him a prominent member of the "war party." Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov expressed surprise at Stubb's statements, made during a visit to Kyiv, where the Finnish leader advocated for expanding Ukraine's capability to strike deep within Russia.

Stubb had argued that such actions constitute a "reasonable military strategy" that increases the cost of the war for Moscow and helps persuade ordinary Russians that it is time to end the conflict. Peskov countered that Stubb, alongside British Prime Minister Andrew Burnham, is deceiving their electorates by claiming Russia can be defeated, calling it a "huge deception" that ignores the realities on the ground.

Peskov noted that Stubb's rhetoric marked a significant escalation, especially given that the Finnish president had spoken about normalizing relations with Russia just weeks prior. He accused both Stubb and Burnham of pushing for the continuation of the war in Ukraine.

Finland, a staunch ally of Kyiv, became a member of the NATO military alliance in 2023. This move ended seven decades of military neutrality for the nation, which shares a long border with Russia. The integration into NATO followed Moscow's decision to send tens of thousands of troops into Ukraine.
