Kurash tournament in Uzbekistan ends in murder

The ancient sport of kurash, a source of national pride for Uzbekistan, was marred by a shocking act of violence in Denau. What should have been a celebration of tradition and athletic prowess turned into a scene of tragedy when a dispute following a match escalated into a fatal stabbing. The victim, identified as the father of wrestler Ayubkhon Khurramov, was attacked from behind by Doston Zhabborov, the brother of Khurramov's opponent, Bustanbek Zhabborov.

During the tournament, the son of the famous wrestler Nizomiddin Chutboyev — Ayubkhon Khurramov — defeated his opponent Bustanbek Zhabborov. After the defeat, his brother, Doston Zhabborov, couldn’t control his emotions and, according to media reports, attacked the winner’s father.

This incident is particularly disturbing as it occurred during a tournament held on May 9th at the local medical college stadium. The swift response from the Denau district prosecutor's office, which has initiated criminal proceedings for intentional murder motivated by hooliganism, is noted. The suspect's detention, coupled with reports of a prior criminal record and aggressive behavior, paints a grim picture. It is a stark reminder that even within cultural practices, underlying issues of aggression and conflict can surface with devastating consequences.
