Kuwait's 'Soof' Center Wins MENA Innovative Energy Project Award

Kuwait's 'Soof' yarn manufacturing center has achieved regional recognition, winning the 2026 Innovative Energy Project of the Year Award for the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region.

The award is granted by the US-based Association of Energy Engineers (AEE) in recognition of its excellence in applying innovative solutions in energy efficiency and sustainability.

The award, presented by the U.S.-based Association of Energy Engineers (AEE), acknowledges the center's successful application of innovative solutions in energy efficiency and sustainability. The 'Soof' center is distinguished as the country's first sustainable factory dedicated to processing locally sourced wool.

This initiative stems from a national strategic partnership involving the Al Sadu Weaving Cooperative Society and the Kuwait Livestock Transport and Trading Company. Its primary aim is to generate added value from Kuwait's natural wool resources while promoting the concepts of sustainability and the circular economy.

The statement noted that this partnership aims to achieve added value from this natural resource and promote the concepts of sustainability and the circular economy.

The project originated from Al Sadu Society's idea to utilize local wool, which had limited application. The Kuwait Foundation for the Advancement of Sciences (KFAS) adopted and funded a research project through the Kuwait Institute for Scientific Research (KISR) to assess the feasibility of processing Nuaimi sheep wool. The research confirmed the technical and economic viability of this industry.

This contributed to establishing the center as a successful model for transforming scientific research outcomes into a sustainable industrial project.

The 'Soof' center serves as a model for translating scientific research into a sustainable industrial venture. It revitalizes traditional wool spinning and weaving crafts by supplying high-quality local wool for community training. This process adds significant value to animal production, as wool was previously exported at low prices, thereby improving the economic feasibility of livestock farming in Kuwait. The project exemplifies circular economy principles, enhances resource efficiency, minimizes environmental impact through clean energy and water recycling, and utilizes production waste for fertilizer manufacturing.
