Kwankwaso urges Yari to reconsider Tinubu campaign council role

Rabiu Kwankwaso, the vice-presidential candidate for the Nigeria Democratic Congress, has appealed to former Zamfara State Governor Abdul’aziz Yari to reconsider his acceptance of the Director-General role for the All Progressives Congress (APC) Presidential Campaign Council.

Kwankwaso expressed surprise that Yari, a former governor familiar with the challenges facing Nigerians, would lead a campaign aimed at continuing the current administration. He specifically cited the ongoing issues of insecurity, poverty, and unemployment that plague the country. "I particularly appeal to my brother, Senator Abdul’aziz Yari, who has accepted to serve as Director-General of the APC Presidential Campaign Council, to reflect deeply and reconsider accepting this responsibility," Kwankwaso stated.

Kwankwaso argued that Yari, as a prominent leader from the North-West, is well aware of the severe impact of insecurity, poverty, and displacement on the region's inhabitants. "I therefore will be surprised if in his good conscience, will lead a campaign whose principal objective is to secure the continuation of a government under which many of the people he once governed, and other innocent Nigerians, remain trapped in these challenges?" he questioned.

The APC recently announced its 2027 Presidential Campaign Council, with President Bola Tinubu as chairman and Yari as Director-General. Kwankwaso views the council's composition as indicative of the choice Nigerians will face in the 2027 election, questioning whether the APC offers a "new beginning" or a continuation of the existing system.

Furthermore, Kwankwaso raised concerns about the inclusion of senior public officials, such as the Executive Chairman of the Nigeria Revenue Service, Zacheus Adedeji, and the Director-General of the Budget Office of the Federation, Tanimu Yakubu, in the campaign's fundraising and finance committees. Adedeji is listed as Deputy Director of Fundraising, while Yakubu is Secretary, Finance/Treasurer.
