Kwara traffic agency sacks personnel, demotes two over extortion

The Kwara State Road Traffic Management Authority (KWARTMA) has taken decisive disciplinary action, dismissing one personnel and demoting two others for alleged extortion. The incident occurred during the monthly environmental sanitation exercise in Ilorin, where the individuals were reportedly caught engaging in unethical conduct with motorists.

A viral video circulating online captured three KWARTMA personnel allegedly involved in the misconduct at the Geri Alimi Roundabout on Saturday, June 27, 2026. The footage sparked public concern, prompting an immediate investigation by the authority's management. The Chief Executive Officer of KWARTMA, Abdullahi Oba, acknowledged the public's unease, stating that the behavior depicted in the video did not align with the organization's values, operational standards, or official policies.

Following an interrogation and investigation by the Provost Department, the implicated personnel were brought before the Senior Staff Management Committee. They underwent disciplinary proceedings in accordance with public service rules. The committee found them culpable, and the sanctions, effective July 9, 2026, were applied. Oba described the dismissal as a significant disciplinary action for KWARTMA, emphasizing the seriousness with which the management treats corruption and extortion.

Oba stressed that the disciplinary measure serves as a deterrent to other personnel and reinforces KWARTMA's commitment to public trust. He urged all staff to maintain the highest standards of professionalism, integrity, and accountability. The authority assured the public that its personnel would continue to perform their duties professionally and within legal boundaries, underscoring its dedication to transparency and due process.
