Kwon Young-jin and Seo Beom-soo seek review of party disciplinary action, Jin Jong-oh plans injunction

People Power Party lawmakers Kwon Young-jin and Seo Beom-soo have asked the party ethics committee to reconsider their disciplinary penalties, while Jin Jong-oh is preparing to take his case to court.

Kwon said on Facebook that he filed for a review of his 18-month suspension on the grounds that committee members who could have acted unfairly took part in deliberations. He also cited the committee’s decision not to disclose its membership, which he said restricted his right to request that members be recused, as well as concerns over equal treatment in similar cases.

I ask that you closely examine the participation in disciplinary deliberations of members who may have reached an unfair decision, the restriction of my right to seek recusal because the committee membership was not disclosed, and concerns over equal treatment with similar cases.

The ethics committee suspended Kwon on June 20 after he allegedly grabbed floor leader Chung Jum-sik by the collar while protesting the allocation of National Assembly standing committees. Seo received a 10-month suspension over inappropriate remarks concerning the Busan rampage attack case and filed his own review request the previous day.

Jin received a two-year suspension for supporting independent lawmaker Han Dong-hoon during the June 3 local elections. He plans to file an injunction this week seeking to suspend the effect of the disciplinary decision. Cho Kyoung-tae, who received a two-and-a-half-year suspension after campaigning against fellow party member Park Deok-hum during the election of an opposition-party quota deputy speaker, has said he will pursue neither a review nor an injunction, arguing that “politics should be resolved through politics.”
