Kyrgyz Lawmaker Urges Aid for Women Imprisoned in Iraq

A Kyrgyz lawmaker is calling on the government to address the plight of around 40 Kyrgyz citizens, predominantly women, imprisoned in Iraq. Dastan Bekeshev, a member of the Jogorku Kenesh parliament, stated that many of these women are not guilty of crimes themselves but ended up in Iraq by accompanying their husbands who were involved in armed conflicts.

Bekeshev, who maintains contact with the imprisoned women, believes they require legal assistance. He has formally requested the Prosecutor General's Office and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to investigate the possibility of providing legal support and to consider an agreement for the transfer of convicted individuals to serve their sentences in Kyrgyzstan.
