Kyrgyzstan: Kurban Asanov Appeals Sentence, Citing Disagreement with Verdict

Kurban Asanov, a figure involved in the "Case of 75," is challenging his conviction, stating he never fully admitted guilt for the charges. Speaking before the Bishkek City Court on August 13, Asanov explained his reasons for appealing the sentence handed down by the Pervomaisky District Court.

Asanov emphasized that he could only speak for himself regarding the accusations. "I fully did not admit my guilt for the charges brought against me," he told reporters. He specifically contested the charge of violent seizure of power, asserting his disagreement from the outset of the trial. When asked if he considered the court's decision political, Asanov declined to give a definitive answer, reiterating that his primary motivation for appealing is his fundamental disagreement with the initial ruling.

"We disagree with the district court's decision, which is why we appealed it," Asanov stated. He is pushing for an open hearing in the appellate court to review his case. The "Case of 75" involves several prominent politicians, including former State Committee for National Security Chairman Kamchybek Tashiev, Parliament Speaker Nurlanbek Turgunbek uulu, and Prosecutor General Kurmanul Zulushev.

Among those implicated are five signatories of an appeal to the president for early elections: Bekbolot Talgarbekov, Kurban Asanov, Kurmanbek Dyikanbaev, Aaly Karashev, and Emil Uzakbaev. In early July, the Pervomaisky District Court found all defendants guilty of attempting a violent power grab. Each received a four-year prison sentence with property confiscation, though the sentences were replaced with a three-year probation period.
