Kyrgyzstan Launches Construction of Balykchy, Cholpon-Ata Railway

Kyrgyzstan has officially commenced the construction of the Balykchy, Cholpon-Ata railway, a significant infrastructure project aimed at enhancing the transport network in the Issyk-Kul region. President Sadyr Japarov marked the occasion by participating in a capsule-laying ceremony, signaling the project's commencement.

The new railway line will span 86 kilometers and is designed to connect with the ongoing Balykchy-Kochkor railway construction. It is envisioned as a key component of the region's developing transport infrastructure, with plans for integration with the Issyk-Kul International Airport. This integration will support the creation of a modern multimodal transport hub, combining rail, road, and air travel facilities along the coast.

President Japarov highlighted the project's potential to significantly increase freight traffic, estimating an annual capacity of up to 5 million tons. This cargo is expected to include essential construction materials for major regional development projects. Furthermore, the railway is anticipated to stimulate tourism by improving passenger traffic and alleviating traffic congestion, particularly during peak holiday seasons.

The Balykchy, Cholpon-Ata railway has been a subject of discussion for several years, with previous reports identifying it as the initial phase in developing a comprehensive railway network along the Issyk-Kul shore. The project is expected to substantially improve transport connectivity throughout the region.
