Kyrgyzstan Legalizes More Than 5,500 Vehicles with Foreign Plates

Kyrgyzstan has completed an additional campaign to legalize vehicles carrying foreign number plates, registering 5,531 vehicles by Sept. 1, 2026.

Of the legalized vehicles, 4,870 had engine capacities of up to 2,000 cubic centimeters. Another 661 had larger engines, and 48 cars had been converted from right-hand drive to left-hand drive. The vehicles received Kyrgyz state registration plates carrying the regional code “10.”

The campaign applied to foreign-plated vehicles imported into Kyrgyzstan by Dec. 31, 2024, that had not previously been registered in the country. Each citizen could legalize only one vehicle, subject to identification by its VIN code or other factory identification numbers.

Authorities excluded wanted vehicles, cars with altered or falsified identification numbers, and vehicles facing restrictions on registration. Cars with modified steering-wheel placement also had to pass a technical inspection. Authorities denied legalization when a vehicle failed safety requirements or received a negative expert assessment.
