Kyrgyzstan marks 16th anniversary of deadly 2010 ethnic clashes

Residents of the Suzak district in Kyrgyzstan's Jalal-Abad region gathered to mark the Day of Remembrance for the victims of the tragic events of June 2010. The solemn occasion saw participants convene at the memorial for the fallen at the Topurak-Bel site, where they laid flowers and recited prayers.

Among those present were Islamkul Uvaydullaev, the deputy plenipotentiary representative of the president in the Jalal-Abad region, local authorities from the Suzak district and the city of Manas, regional residents, members of the "Sanpa Martyrs" public association, and relatives of those who lost their lives.

Uvaydullaev addressed the attendees, acknowledging the June 2010 events as one of the most sorrowful periods in Kyrgyzstan's history. He extended condolences to the families of the victims and stressed the enduring need to remember those lost. The tragedy, he noted, serves as a stark reminder of the critical importance of public accord, mutual understanding, and unity.

The deputy representative emphasized that fostering friendship, brotherhood, and interethnic harmony remains a cornerstone for the nation's stable development. The 2010 events in southern Kyrgyzstan resulted in 446 deaths and approximately 2,000 injuries, with 57 individuals still unaccounted for. A particularly harrowing incident occurred on June 12, 2010, in Sanpa, where an attack on the Bishkek-Osh highway claimed 16 lives, left two missing, and destroyed nine vehicles.
