Kyrgyzstan MP Urges Lifting TikTok Ban

Bishkek – A call to reconsider the ban on the popular social media platform TikTok has emerged from within the Kyrgyz Parliament, with Member of Parliament Mahabat Mavlyanova advocating for its open use. Mavlyanova argued during a parliamentary session that despite concerns over the moral upbringing of youth, outright bans are an ineffective approach to managing the platform's influence. She pointed out that many Kyrgyz citizens, particularly the younger generation, currently access TikTok via VPNs, indicating a strong demand for the service. More importantly, Mavlyanova highlighted TikTok's growing role beyond mere entertainment, emphasizing its utility as a tool for education, skill development, and business promotion. From a Kyrgyz perspective, this debate reflects a broader tension between safeguarding traditional values and embracing the digital age.
