Kyrgyzstan PM Warns of Food Inflation Risks in EAEU

Adylbek Kasymaliev, Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers of Kyrgyzstan, has warned that countries within the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) must intensify their collaborative efforts to safeguard food security. Speaking at the 47th Eurasian Intergovernmental Council meeting in Cholpon-Ata, Kasymaliev stressed the growing threat posed by rising global food prices and the resulting food inflation.

Kasymaliev stated that current global challenges necessitate more than just situational analysis; they demand the development of effective, rapid response mechanisms. "One of these challenges is the rise in global food prices. Food inflation is becoming a source of social tension, especially under persistent inflationary pressures," he remarked. The Kyrgyz Prime Minister emphasized that these issues require a proactive approach from all EAEU member states.

He specifically called upon the Eurasian Economic Commission (EEC) to maintain vigilant monitoring of agricultural markets. The EEC should focus on forecasting potential product deficits and price increases, utilizing data provided by EAEU member states. Kasymaliev believes the commission must also promptly present solutions to the union's governing bodies to preemptively address and minimize risks of imbalance within the food market.

Data from Kyrgyzstan's National Statistical Committee illustrates the trend, showing a 5.4% increase in prices for food and non-alcoholic beverages in the first half of 2026. Over the past year, the overall price hike for these items has reached at least 9.2 percent, underscoring the inflationary pressures Kasymaliev addressed.
