Kyrgyzstan to begin exporting raspberries, tayberries and currants to China

Kyrgyzstan has secured access to China's market for raspberries, tayberries and currants, opening a new destination for the country's berry producers.

Water Resources, Agriculture and Processing Industry Minister Erlisbek Akunbekov said the market access follows documents signed during Chinese President Xi Jinping's state visit to Kyrgyzstan. He said exporting goods from China is easier than bringing products into the country because Chinese authorities impose strict requirements on imports.

Akunbekov called opening the market a major effort and invited farmers interested in exporting berries to contact the ministry. The ministry said it would provide the necessary assistance.

Kyrgyzstan produces about 240,000 tonnes of fruit and berry products each year. The main production areas are the Issyk-Kul, Batken and Osh regions. Strawberries, raspberries, currants and cherries are among the most common crops.

The country exported more than 5,300 tonnes of fresh berries during the first five months of the year. Russia and Kazakhstan were the main export destinations.
