Kyrgyzstan, UN discuss climate policy and environmental cooperation

Kyrgyzstan's commitment to climate action and environmental protection was a key focus during a meeting between Minister of Natural Resources, Ecology, and Technical Supervision Akyl Toktobayev and UN Resident Coordinator Antje Grawe. The two officials explored priority areas for cooperation in climate policy, environmental conservation, and sustainable development.

A significant point of discussion was the recent adoption of the Law "On Climate Activity." This legislation establishes a legal framework for implementing the nation's climate policy, fulfilling international climate change obligations, and attracting climate financing. Both sides acknowledged its importance in advancing Kyrgyzstan's climate agenda.

The meeting also delved into the implementation of Kyrgyzstan's updated Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC). Efforts to mobilize climate financing, strengthen national capacity for monitoring, reporting, and evaluating progress, and integrate climate adaptation and biodiversity conservation into national programs were emphasized. Discussions also touched upon improving air quality and environmental monitoring systems.

Furthermore, the participants discussed preparations for the upcoming "Bishkek+25" mountain summit. This event aims to promote the conservation of mountain ecosystems and enhance the climate resilience of mountainous regions on international platforms, underscoring Kyrgyzstan's role in advocating for mountain environments.
