La Liga: Barca seal Cancelo return to bolster defence

Barcelona has officially announced the signing of defender Joao Cancelo on a free transfer, securing his services until June 30, 2029. The Portuguese international terminated his contract with Saudi Arabian club Al Hilal to make his return to Camp Nou.

This signing marks Cancelo's third spell with Barcelona, having previously played for the club on loan for the second half of the last season. During his previous stints, he contributed to Hansi Flick's team retaining the La Liga title. The 32-year-old full-back brings a wealth of experience, having played in Portugal, Spain, and Italy before his move to Manchester City in 2019.

Cancelo's recent career path included loan spells at Bayern Munich and Barcelona during the 2023/24 campaign, followed by his move to Al Hilal in 2024. His arrival is a significant boost for Barcelona's defense as they aim to strengthen their squad. He joins other summer acquisitions such as Rodri, Anthony Gordon, and Karim Adeyemi.

The Catalan giants are still actively seeking to sign a striker, particularly after the departures of Robert Lewandowski and Ferran Torres. While Barcelona had reportedly shown interest in Julian Alvarez of Atletico Madrid, negotiations appear to have stalled, prompting the club to explore other options. Barcelona is set to begin their La Liga campaign on Sunday with an away match against Elche.
