La Plata's Estadio Único to Host 2026 Argentine Football Final

La Plata's Estadio Único Diego Armando Maradona will host the final of the 2026 Argentine Clausura tournament on December 12. The decision was finalized during a meeting of the Liga Profesional's Executive Committee.

This designation follows an agreement signed in late 2024 between Buenos Aires Governor Axel Kicillof and Argentine Football Association (AFA) President Claudio Tapia. The pact aims to establish the stadium as a primary venue for Argentine football, a move that saw the AFA relocate its legal headquarters to the province of Buenos Aires.

The stadium, with a capacity of nearly 40,000, has undergone renovations. These improvements include work on the pitch, a new roof, updated lighting, and enhanced interior infrastructure and connectivity. The agreement signifies a strategic alignment between provincial government and football authorities to leverage the facility.

This development also marks a political shift, with the AFA moving from federal oversight under the Ministry of Justice to provincial administration under Kicillof's government. The choice of La Plata for the final is seen by some as a political decision rather than purely a sporting or business one, considering potential venue capacity differences compared to other options.
