La Vega seeks to climb the value chain

La Vega's next leap will not come simply from producing more. It will depend on how much knowledge, processing and value the province can add before its products reach consumers.

The Dominican province already brings together intensive agriculture, agro-industry, manufacturing, exports, tourism and territorial leadership capable of coordinating these activities. Its challenge is to make those strengths operate increasingly as one productive system rather than as separate sectors.

A journey through La Vega shows how clearly productivity can vary within a single province. Constanza has its agricultural valley, Jima Abajo its rice-growing tradition, Jarabacoa its mountain economy, and the provincial capital its concentration of commerce, industry, services and significant export activity.

These economies differ, but they do not have to remain disconnected. The central opportunity for La Vega is to link them and ensure that a growing share of the value that begins in the soil stays within the province as it moves through production and toward the consumer.
