Labour Party names woman as deputy governorship candidate in Benue

The Labour Party has put forward Mrs. Julie Obeta as its deputy governorship candidate for the upcoming general elections in Benue State. This move is highlighted as a significant step towards enhancing women's participation in governance within the state.

Obeta's nomination was announced on Monday at the party's secretariat in Makurdi, following the selection of Mathias Byuan as the party's governorship candidate. Byuan stated that Obeta was unanimously chosen after extensive consultations with party stakeholders across Benue.

This nomination is historic for the Labour Party in Benue State, as it represents the first instance of a female candidate being selected for the deputy governorship role. The party leadership emphasized that Obeta's choice aligns with their commitment to fostering inclusion and increasing the representation of women in political leadership positions.

Obeta brings prior political experience to the role, having served on Goodluck Jonathan's presidential campaign team and as chairman of Okpokwu Local Government Area from 2012 to 2015. She was also previously appointed as a special assistant by Governor Hyacinth Alia in 2023, though she declined the offer. The Labour Party has also expressed its intention to focus on transforming Benue State's economy should they secure the mandate in the 2027 general elections.
