Lach- und Schießgesellschaft returns to Schwabing stage

Munich’s Lach- und Schießgesellschaft is moving again, this time back to Schwabing after less than a year at the Gasteig cultural center.

From the end of October, we will perform at the TamS Theater, just a few steps from our former home.

The legendary cabaret venue said it will begin performing at the TamS Theater from the end of October. The new location stands only a few steps from its former home. The move follows the end of the temporary FatCat project at Gasteig, whose lease expires at the end of September as the long-delayed renovation of the cultural center is finally due to begin.

The stage moved across the Isar in November last year with hopes of making a fresh start. It now describes its stay in Haidhausen as “a short but very beautiful chapter.” The venue said the new arrangement could be seen as a homecoming, “just next door.”

Till Hofmann, the venue’s director, had previously described the uncertainty of temporary use as the risk of a “traveling circus.” He initiated last year’s move after the cabaret’s decades-long association with Schwabing. Hofmann later returned to the leadership after leaving during a dispute.

The venue had reopened at its Schwabing headquarters in November 2024 with a nostalgic event attended by Renate Hildebrandt, widow of the late cabaret artist Dieter Hildebrandt. However, few performances took place there recently. Hofmann told dpa that the move away from Schwabing attracted a large audience. Demand for one evening featuring Gerhard Polt and Austrian comedian Josef Hader was reportedly strong enough to fill Munich’s Olympiahalle twice.
