Lagos governor inspects vandalized bridge, assures safety amid arrests

Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu conducted an on-the-spot assessment of the Festac-Alakija Bridge on Saturday, following damage attributed to suspected vandals. Accompanied by contractors, state officials, and local government chairmen, the governor evaluated the extent of the damage to the structure.

Following the inspection, Governor Sanwo-Olu assured residents of the bridge's structural integrity. He issued a strong warning to those responsible for the vandalism and their accomplices, stating that the full weight of the law would be brought against them. He also urged the public to avoid engaging in such illicit practices, particularly the buying of vandalized government property.

The inspection occurred days after Governor Sanwo-Olu directed security agencies to track down and prosecute those involved, condemning the act as a "criminal assault on public infrastructure." Viral videos had previously shown significant damage to the bridge's concrete pillars and exposed reinforcing steel bars, believed to be the work of scavengers.

In response to the governor's directive, security agencies have arrested no fewer than 27 suspects in connection with the vandalism of the bridge, which links Festac Town to Alakija. The governor emphasized that both the vandals and the buyers of stolen government property would face legal consequences.
