Lagos governor's wife urges daily sanitation to prevent floods and disease

Dr. Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu, wife of the Lagos State Governor, has called on residents to embrace daily sanitation habits as a crucial measure to combat flooding and prevent disease outbreaks.

Speaking during the monthly environmental sanitation exercise in Eputu London, Ibeju-Lekki, Mrs. Sanwo-Olu stressed that maintaining cleanliness should be a daily commitment rather than confined to the designated sanitation day. She urged citizens to refrain from dumping waste into drainage systems, advocating instead for proper disposal with designated refuse collectors to avoid clogging and subsequent flooding.

"This cleanliness that we are observing should be a daily exercise and not only on sanitation day so that we can curb diseases," she stated. "Sanitation is important that we should start from our homes. Let’s desist from throwing waste in the drainage. We should dispose of our refuse with the refuse collectors."

Mrs. Sanwo-Olu praised the growing community engagement in the monthly exercise, noting that residents, including children, were actively participating and showing increased environmental consciousness. She also mentioned the state government's commitment to improving waste management, citing ongoing construction of transfer loading stations and material recovery facilities.

The Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, added that these facilities, including those planned for Olusosun and Simpson, would enhance the state's capacity to manage waste effectively. The governor's wife also highlighted the inclusion of schoolchildren in the exercise to instill environmental values from a young age, with plans to involve tertiary institution students in the future.
