Lagos Public Works Corporation Continues Road Repairs Amidst Heavy Rainfall

The Lagos State Public Works Corporation (LSPWC) is maintaining its commitment to road repairs across the state, even amidst persistent and heavy rainfall that is significantly impacting infrastructure. Engr. Tokunbo Ajanaku, the General Manager of LSPWC, affirmed that the agency remains actively engaged in ensuring roads are safe and motorable, despite operational challenges posed by the intense downpour.

Ajanaku explained that the prolonged rains have not only accelerated the deterioration of road sections but also made permanent asphalt repairs technically difficult. Consequently, the LSPWC's strategy has shifted to emergency response and palliative repairs, along with other engineering solutions, to keep roads serviceable until favorable weather returns. He noted that this situation is not unique to Lagos, as extreme weather events are causing similar damage to public infrastructure in cities worldwide.

Lagos faces particular vulnerability due to its low-lying geography, making its road network susceptible to groundwater pressure and prolonged flooding. Nevertheless, LSPWC has maintained a consistent presence across the state's 57 Local Government Areas. Recent interventions include sectional overlay works on Ozumba Mbadiwe Avenue and Ikorodu Road, as well as sectional maintenance on Funsho Williams Avenue. Additionally, interlocking paving stones have been used on Akilo Road, Ikorodu Road, and Kodesoh Road, while palliative repairs with boulders were conducted in several other locations.

The General Manager also acknowledged the support from Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu and Deputy Governor Dr. Kadri Obafemi Hamzat, whose commitment to improving road infrastructure and facilitating inter-agency collaboration has been crucial. The LSPWC's ongoing efforts aim to mitigate the effects of the adverse weather on the state's transportation network.

The current weather conditions demand a different maintenance approach. Asphalt overlay and other permanent pavement works require dry conditions to guarantee durability and value for public investment. Consequently, while the rains persist, our intervention strategy has focused on emergency response, palliative repairs and other engineering solutions that keep roads serviceable pending the return of favourable weather.
