Lai Ching-te Urges Lawyers to Clarify China’s Use of U.N. Resolution 2758

Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te used a lawyers' dinner to challenge Beijing's interpretation of United Nations Resolution 2758 and call on Taiwan's legal profession to speak for the island internationally.

Speaking at the 79th Lawyers' Day dinner of the National Bar Association, Lai said the Chinese Communist Party had incorrectly used the resolution to argue that Taiwan is part of China. He said the measure dealt only with China's seat and representation at the United Nations and had nothing to do with Taiwan.

Lai urged lawyers to state the position clearly: “Taiwan is a sovereign and independent country, and does not belong to the People's Republic of China.” He praised lawyers for defending social justice, speaking for disadvantaged groups and contributing to Taiwan's judicial diplomacy.

The president also pointed to strong economic forecasts. He said this year's projected growth had reached 11.05 percent and that next year's growth was expected to exceed 6 percent. To preserve Taiwan's competitive advantage for future generations, he said the government had launched its “new ten major AI projects” and was investing in silicon photonics, quantum technology and robotics.

Lai asked lawyers to help address AI governance, digital rights and intellectual property. He also cited expanded social welfare measures, including Long-Term Care 3.0 and higher payments across six welfare programs. The speech ended with a political appeal: lawyers should consider standing for office to help ensure that capable candidates are selected, rather than candidates with alleged gang ties or corruption convictions.
