Taipei – President Lai Ching-te is set to embark on a significant state visit to Eswatini, Taiwan's sole remaining ally in Africa, from April 22 to 27. The journey, characterized by a direct flight that bypasses any third-country transit, underscores Taiwan's determination to maintain and deepen its diplomatic relationships amidst a complex international landscape.

President Lai's visit this time demonstrates Taiwan's strategic autonomy and has not changed its own tone due to external factors such as the Chuan-Xi meeting and Zheng Liwen's visit to China.

This visit is particularly noteworthy as it signals Taiwan's commitment to strategic autonomy. Professor Wang Hong-jen of National Cheng Kung University's Political Science Department and Executive Director of the Prospect Foundation, emphasized that the trip demonstrates Taiwan's resolve to pursue its own diplomatic agenda, irrespective of external factors like the "Chuan-Xi meeting" (referring to potential interactions between US and Chinese leaders) or visits by Taiwanese politicians to mainland China. The emphasis is on strengthening substantive, bilateral ties and ensuring that these relationships are not overshadowed by geopolitical maneuvering.

The President's visit this time is quite low-key and does not arrange transit diplomatic itineraries, mainly to let the people know that even if the international environment changes, our country still needs to strengthen substantive diplomacy with friendly countries and have its own diplomatic itinerary.

Professor Wang highlighted that the itinerary will focus on practical cooperation, particularly in economic, digital, and AI sectors. This approach aims to leverage Taiwan's strengths to foster mutual growth and expand the influence of Taiwanese businesses and technology within Eswatini. The strategy involves innovative cooperation models that integrate supply chain and digital domain collaborations, moving beyond traditional diplomatic exchanges.

Adding a layer of caution, Professor Wang warned of potential disinformation campaigns aimed at disrupting the visit's objectives and undermining confidence in Taiwan's international engagement. He urged the public to be discerning of misleading information, especially in light of China's recent efforts to enhance its ties with African nations, including offering tariff exemptions to many African countries excluding Eswatini. Despite these pressures, Eswatini's continued willingness to engage with Taiwan is seen as a testament to the strength of their bilateral relationship, and President Lai's visit is expected to solidify this bond.
