Landlord Enraged by Potential Multi-Million Won Tax Hike After Fulfilling Rental Obligations

A landlord in South Korea, who owns three registered rental properties in addition to their own home, is facing a potential surge in their comprehensive real estate tax, with estimates suggesting it could increase from under 10 million won to tens of millions of won annually. The property owner, identified as 'A', received this alarming news during a recent tax consultation.

'A' had diligently fulfilled the mandatory 8-year rental period for their properties. However, they are now in a difficult position. The properties are still occupied by tenants, and restrictions related to land transaction permit zones further complicate any attempt to sell the real estate. This leaves 'A' unable to easily divest from the properties even as the tax burden looms.

The landlord expressed significant frustration and anger, stating they relied on government policies when registering their rental businesses.
