Landslide Kills Six in Mumbai Amid Heavy Monsoon Rains

At least six people died and four were injured when a landslide struck a densely populated Mumbai neighborhood early Wednesday, triggered by intense monsoon rains. The disaster occurred in the suburb of Ghatkopar, where a hillside collapsed onto two or three homes in a tightly packed cluster.

Rescue operations involving firefighters, police, and disaster response teams were launched immediately. However, officials noted that efforts were complicated by narrow access lanes that prevented the use of heavy machinery. Rescuers managed to pull at least 10 people from the debris, rushing them to a government hospital. Six victims, including two children and two teenagers, were pronounced dead upon arrival.

Mumbai Mayor Ritu Tawde visited the affected area and announced monetary compensation for the victims' families. India's weather department forecasts continued active monsoon conditions across western India, prompting authorities to issue warnings for residents in flood and landslide-prone areas.

Experts have long warned about Mumbai's vulnerability to monsoon-related disasters, citing rapid urbanization, construction on unstable slopes, and inadequate drainage systems. Climate change is exacerbating these risks by bringing heavier and more unpredictable rainfall to the city of over 20 million people.
