Lara Gut-Behrami retires from skiing after career-ending injury

Swiss ski racer Lara Gut-Behrami has announced her retirement from the sport earlier than planned, following a training accident. The 35-year-old's career, spanning almost two decades, saw her achieve numerous accolades, including an overall World Cup title, World Championship victories, and Olympic gold.

Gut-Behrami had initially planned to retire at the end of the 2025/26 season. However, a serious knee injury prevented her from competing in the 2026 Olympic Games, leading to speculation about a potential comeback. She celebrated her last overall World Cup victory in 2024, having previously won the title in 2016.

Her dominance in the Super-G discipline is notable, as she became the first female skier to win the World Cup in this category six times. Throughout her career, Gut-Behrami amassed an impressive 48 World Cup victories and achieved 101 podium finishes. She also demonstrated versatility, winning World Cup races across four different disciplines.

Her World Championship successes include two gold medals in 2021, in the Super-G and giant slalom. The pinnacle of her career was arguably the Olympic gold medal she secured at the 2022 Beijing Games. She also earned a World Championship silver medal in the downhill in 2009 as a 17-year-old.

Gut-Behrami is married to former Swiss international footballer Valon Behrami since July 2018. Her father, Pauli Gut, also played a significant role in her career as her trainer.
