Large lifting operation between Eeklo and Maldegem: crane places bridge beams on N9 bridge

In Belgium's Meetjesland region, the Agency for Roads and Traffic is undertaking a significant operation to install bridge beams for a new crossing over the diversion canal. This new bridge will connect the towns of Maldegem and Eeklo. The beams, which are massive horizontal structures ranging from 17.5 to 25 meters in length and weighing between 25 and 39 tons, are being carefully placed by large cranes. This intricate lifting operation is a crucial phase in the comprehensive renovation of the existing bridge, aimed at extending its service life. Residents and onlookers can observe the impressive engineering feat from designated safe viewing points, including the 7e Regiment Jagerslaan and the towpath at Loskaai. The entire renovation project commenced in May 2026 and is scheduled for completion by the end of the current year. During this period, the bridge remains fully closed to all traffic.
