LASTMA arrests tanker driver after dispatch rider died in Lagos

Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) officials have apprehended a tanker driver involved in a fatal accident that killed a dispatch rider in the Maryland-Ikeja area of Lagos. The incident occurred on Kodesho Road, opposite Mrs Filling Station, as the tanker, registered as T-19089LA and carrying groundnut oil, allegedly struck and fatally crushed the rider.

The driver reportedly fled the scene immediately after the crash, failing to offer aid to the victim or report the incident to authorities. LASTMA officers, alerted by a distress call, launched an immediate pursuit and successfully intercepted the fleeing vehicle and its driver before they could escape. The driver and the tanker have since been handed over to the State Traffic Department at the Area F Police Command in Ikeja for further investigation and potential prosecution.

LASTMA officials secured the accident scene, managed traffic flow, and coordinated emergency response efforts during the recovery operation. Fellow dispatch riders present at the scene informed the deceased rider's family and offered their condolences. This latest tragedy adds to a disturbing pattern of fatal crashes involving dispatch riders and heavy-duty vehicles reported in Lagos in recent months.

Previous incidents include a dispatch rider killed in May involving a minibus and an articulated trailer, and two dispatch riders who died in separate April crashes with a tanker and a heavy-duty truck. The recurring nature of these accidents highlights the significant risks faced by dispatch riders navigating busy roads for extended hours and the inherent dangers posed by the interaction between motorcycles and large articulated vehicles. LASTMA General Manager Olalekan Bakare-Oki described the crash as "heartbreaking and avoidable," urging heavy-duty vehicle operators to exercise extreme caution and adhere strictly to traffic regulations.
