Late August heavy rains cause over $140 million in agricultural losses in Taiwan; Guavas hit hardest

Taiwan is grappling with substantial agricultural losses exceeding NT$140 million following heavy rainfall in late August. The Ministry of Agriculture confirmed the figures based on reports from local governments, highlighting the widespread impact of the adverse weather.

Chiayi County bore the brunt of the damage, with agricultural losses reaching NT$44.1 million. Other severely affected areas include Yunlin, Pingtung, Tainan, and Kaohsiung. Among the various crops, guavas suffered the most significant losses, amounting to NT$22.32 million. Papayas, scallions, peanuts, and bamboo shoots also sustained considerable damage.

Beyond crop damage, the rains also impacted the fisheries sector, with losses estimated at NT$18.69 million, primarily affecting milkfish and marble goby. Livestock also saw losses, mainly affecting chickens. Damage to private facilities was reported at NT$3.05 million.

In response to the disaster, the Ministry of Agriculture has declared several areas eligible for cash assistance. This includes all agricultural products and livestock in Chiayi, Tainan, Kaohsiung, and Pingtung, excluding animal sheds. Aquaculture farms in Tainan, Kaohsiung, and Pingtung will also receive disaster relief to aid farmers in resuming their operations.
