Laura Legal, kinesiologist and pioneer in osteopath training who gained international recognition, dies at 84

Laura Legal, a leading figure in osteopathic education in Argentina and a respected kinesiologist, has died at the age of 84. For the past 30 years, she directed the Osteopathic School of Buenos Aires (EOBA), an institution affiliated with the University of Buenos Aires' Faculty of Medical Sciences for postgraduate studies.

Legal, who held a doctorate in kinesiology and physiatry from the University of Buenos Aires, was widely recognized as a pioneer in teaching osteopathy when the subspecialty was still little-known in the country. She dedicated her career to the dissemination, teaching, and research of osteopathy, establishing EOBA and its peer-reviewed Revista de Investigación Osteopática. Her editorial committee included specialists from both Argentine and international universities.

Colleagues and former students remember Legal as a "passionate" professional and an "enthusiastic trainer" who profoundly influenced many practitioners and educators in osteopathy, not only in Argentina but across the region. Osvaldo Patiño, co-director of the Traumatological Physiotherapy program at the Catholic University of Uruguay, described her as leaving a path of "exemplarity for future generations" and possessing "uncommon qualities in these times."

Professional associations also paid tribute to her significant contributions. The Argentine Association of Kinesiology (AAK) stated, "A great has left us. Her legacy, her teaching, and the memory of a woman who made history in our profession remain." Legal's work in promoting osteopathy, a discipline focused on manual techniques to restore the body's functional balance, has left a lasting imprint on the field.
