Lawmaker Accuses Rival's Supporters of Assault; Campaign Denies Political Motive

Nationalist Party legislator Yeh Yuan-chih accused supporters of Democratic Progressive Party candidate Su Chiao-hui of assaulting his assistant on July 26, 2026, during a campaign event in New Taipei City. Yeh stated that he was accompanying New Taipei mayoral candidate Li Chuan-chiao when an individual, whom he identified as a Su supporter, attacked his assistant and then attempted to attack him.

Yeh described the incident as a "shock" and a "pain" for his assistant. He sarcastically noted that it was the one-year anniversary of a recall vote and criticized the "Bluebird" movement, suggesting its supporters remained "radical." Yeh also criticized Su for her frequent absences from legislative sessions and demanded an apology for allegedly spreading hatred.

Su Chiao-hui's campaign office responded by stating that any act of violence should not be condoned. Spokesperson Ma Heng-heng Yi-jiang noted that the individual in the video did not display any political slogans or affiliations, and therefore, the incident should not be exploited to create political animosity. The campaign office emphasized Su's positive and policy-focused approach to her candidacy, contrasting it with what they described as smear tactics from the opposing camp.
