Lawmaker alleges election commission manipulated presidential vote data

A member of the People Power Party, Joo Jin-woo, has accused the National Election Commission (NEC) of intentionally manipulating voter turnout data during South Korea's 21st presidential election. The allegations stem from an analysis of hourly voting data from 109 polling stations, which revealed suspicious patterns that Joo claims indicate deliberate falsification.

Joo presented several examples during a press conference, highlighting instances where voter numbers increased in precise 100-vote increments at hourly intervals. One polling station in Seoul's Seodaemun-gu reportedly recorded exactly 100 new voters at 7 a.m., 8 a.m., 9 a.m., and 11 a.m., with 200 new voters at 10 a.m. and 12 p.m., and 200 more at 1 p.m. Another case cited involved a polling station in Changwon's Uichang-gu where the voter count increased by 100 every hour for five consecutive hours from 7 a.m. to 12 p.m.

Furthermore, Joo pointed to 90 polling stations where the voter count reportedly remained stagnant for extended periods. For example, one polling station in Osan, Gyeonggi Province, saw a surge of 259 voters in one hour, followed by no increase for the next three hours. Another instance involved a polling station in Seoul's Gangnam-gu where 292 voters were recorded in one hour, but only two additional voters participated over the subsequent two hours. Joo argued that such "freezes" in voting activity are unrealistic and suggest manipulation.

He went further, calling the NEC the "election manipulation committee" and describing the alleged intentional falsification of voter data, both in the recent local elections and the presidential election, as "organized and habitual criminal behavior."

In response to these accusations, Joo proposed a joint investigation by both ruling and opposition parties into the NEC's computer servers. He suggested this as an alternative to the proposed recount of the Olympic Park polling stations, urging the Democratic Party to consider this approach. The lawmaker indicated he would bring this proposal for discussion within the special committee for national investigation.
