Le Centre Vaud breaks with its former alliance and begins search for a State Council candidate

Valérie Dittli’s departure removed the expected climax from Le Centre Vaud’s delegates’ meeting in Epalinges: a vote on whether to support her candidacy for another term on the Vaud State Council in 2027.

Dittli had announced her intention to seek re-election in mid-August. But last week she told Le Temps that she would leave the party and create the Liberal Movement with other centrist figures. The vote on her candidacy therefore disappeared from the evening’s agenda, though the turmoil surrounding her departure kept attention focused on the meeting.

Le Centre Vaud also broke with the Alliance vaudoise and chose to draw closer to centrist parties. With Isabelle Chappuis no longer seeking a seat on the State Council, the party now needs to find a candidate quickly.

The dispute had intensified over the party presidency’s decision to limit the vote to delegates. The measure complied with the statutes, but appeared unfavorable to Dittli because many delegates had already taken positions on her candidacy within the cantonal committee and the presidency committee. Dittli called the decision “the last straw” and said she would not attend the Epalinges meeting to avoid what she regarded as a predictable humiliation.
