Lebanon arrests man accused of sending $500,000 to Islamic State in Syria

Lebanese security forces have apprehended a man accused of funneling substantial funds to the Islamic State (IS) in Syria. The suspect is alleged to have transferred approximately $500,000, which he stole from his father's safe, to the extremist organization.

A judicial official, speaking on condition of anonymity, revealed that the investigation indicates the man was part of an active cell operating between Lebanon and Syria. This cell reportedly included three other members who are currently detained in Tripoli and were responsible for coordinating with IS elements in Syria.

The investigation showed that the individual was part of an active cell between Lebanon and Syria, including three members incarcerated in the city of Tripoli who were coordinating with IS in Syria.

Further details from the investigation suggest the group's purpose was to finance IS activities, potentially for carrying out terrorist acts within Syria or Lebanon. Two other alleged members of the cell are believed to have fled to Syria across the porous border after the case came to light.

The arrest highlights the ongoing threat posed by IS cells in the region. Despite the group's territorial defeat in 2019, remnants continue to operate, particularly in desert areas, and occasionally claim responsibility for attacks. The Lebanese authorities have been active in combating IS-linked activities, with recent arrests including a Syrian IS commander.
