Lebanon detains former al-Assad-era general, weighs handing him to Syria

Lebanon has detained a former Syrian army general, Adel Issa, who served under the ousted Bashar al-Assad regime, with authorities currently deliberating whether to extradite him to Syria. Judicial and security sources confirmed Issa's arrest in Beirut on Friday.

Issa, 67, reportedly visited the Syrian embassy in Beirut for administrative purposes. Embassy staff alerted Lebanese authorities upon realizing he was a wanted individual in Syria. He was subsequently taken into custody by investigators from the Central Criminal Investigation Department and is being held at the Beirut Palace of Justice.

If handed over to Syrian authorities, Issa's extradition would mark the first such transfer since the collapse of the al-Assad government in December 2024. Following the opposition's seizure of Damascus, many former officials fled to Lebanon. Issa himself admitted to entering Lebanon illegally after al-Assad's fall but has denied any wrongdoing.

Lebanese officials are awaiting formal charges from Damascus, expected by Monday, before making a final decision on extradition. The public prosecutor has requested Issa's extradition file from his Syrian counterpart. Issa previously commanded Syria's 17th Division and later led ground forces in Deir Az Zour province until his retirement in late 2016, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

Issa's case occurs amidst Syria's broader reckoning with the al-Assad era, which saw numerous former security officials accused of abuses face arrest and trial. Notably, al-Assad's cousin, Atef Najib, is currently on trial for his alleged role in triggering the 2011 uprising.
