Lee holds back-to-back summits with German, Canadian leaders

South Korean President Lee Jae-myung held a series of bilateral meetings with European leaders on the sidelines of the G7 summit in France. On June 17, he met with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, emphasizing the potential for synergy between South Korea and Germany in numerous areas. "We can create synergy through cooperation," Lee stated, expressing a desire to hear Merz's insights and work together to elevate the bilateral relationship to a new level.

Chancellor Merz acknowledged South Korea's high standing in Germany and affirmed the strong existing relationship. "Bilateral relations are very good," Merz said, noting his planned visit to South Korea in late October. He expressed hope for another meeting during his trip. This meeting marked the third encounter between the leaders, following previous discussions at the G7 summit in Canada and the APEC summit in Gyeongju.

President Lee also met with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, who expressed pleasure at their reunion. Carney highlighted the continuous growth of the partnership between their nations since their last meeting in South Korea, citing strengthened cooperation in defense, investment, and culture. President Lee recalled the deep historical ties forged during the Korean War, expressing gratitude for Canada's assistance. He characterized the current relationship as one between "like-minded countries" that mutually benefit each other, suggesting further discussions on concrete areas of cooperation.

Earlier, President Lee attended a welcome event for the summit, where he exchanged greetings with U.S. President Donald Trump and the host, French President Emmanuel Macron. When Macron greeted him in English, Lee responded, "I am so happy." He also had a brief conversation with President Trump before the group photo. The meetings underscored South Korea's active engagement in international diplomacy and its efforts to deepen strategic partnerships with key global players.
