Legendary Coach Željko Obradović Poised for Return to Panathinaikos

Basketball coaching icon Željko Obradović is reportedly set to return to Panathinaikos, the Greek club where he forged his most successful coaching legacy. Obradović, widely regarded as one of Europe's greatest strategists, has been without a coaching position since ending his second tenure at Partizan in November.

His previous stint with Panathinaikos, from 1999 to 2012, was a golden era for both the coach and the club. During this period, Obradović guided the Athens-based team to an impressive 11 Greek league championships out of 13 attempts, secured seven Greek Cups, and clinched five Euroleague titles. Panathinaikos's total of seven European trophies includes only two not orchestrated by Obradović.

Sources close to the Greek club have indicated that an agreement is expected by the end of the weekend. Obradović is reportedly offered a contract for two or three years, with an annual salary of €4 million. Beyond the financial aspect, a significant draw for Obradović appears to be the level of control he will wield.

Crucially, the deal reportedly includes a role similar to that of a manager in English football. Obradović will not only lead the team from the sidelines but will also have complete autonomy in forming his coaching staff and selecting players. This comprehensive authority over the entire sports sector is seen as a key factor in his potential return.
