Lekki Port Phase 2 begins soon – Sanwo-Olu

Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has announced that development work on Phase 2 of the Lekki Port project is set to commence soon. This expansion is a key part of the state's strategy to reinforce its status as West Africa's premier maritime and logistics hub.

The Lekki Deep Seaport, within five years, is moving to phase two because it is almost reaching the full potential of its installed capacity.

Speaking at the Invest Lagos Summit 3.0, Governor Sanwo-Olu highlighted Lagos' critical role in regional trade and economic integration. He noted that the rapid growth of the Lekki Deep Seaport necessitates its expansion to handle increasing cargo volumes. The port's development is seen as vital for tapping into the African Continental Free Trade Area's market of over 1.4 billion people and a GDP exceeding $3 trillion. "The Lekki Deep Seaport, within five years, is moving to phase two because it is almost reaching the full potential of its installed capacity," the governor stated.

With the AfCFTA creating a market of over 1.4 billion people and a combined gross domestic product exceeding $3tn, Lagos occupies a uniquely strategic position.

Wang Qiang, the Managing Director of Lekki Port, commended the Lagos State Government for fostering a stable and investment-friendly climate. He emphasized that Phase 2 will be crucial for increasing the port's operational and cargo-handling capabilities, improving logistics along the Lekki Corridor, and attracting additional global shipping investments. "The commencement of the next phase of development represents a significant milestone in our journey to expand capacity, enhance operational efficiency, and strengthen Lekki Port’s position as a premier gateway for West African trade under the AfCFTA framework," Qiang added.

The expansion aligns with Nigeria's broader trade facilitation goals and the growing demands of international shipping networks. Governor Sanwo-Olu stressed that these projects are not mere aspirations but are actively being implemented and funded, transforming the state's investment landscape.
