Leknessund Claims First Stage Win; Pogacar Extends Vuelta a España Lead

Andreas Leknessund achieved a career milestone Friday, capturing his first-ever stage victory at the Vuelta a España. The UnoX-Mobility rider launched a decisive solo attack less than eight kilometers from the finish line on the uphill stage to Valdelinares.

His compatriot and teammate Tobias Johannessen finished second, 34 seconds behind, while Wout Van Aert of Visma took third place, 47 seconds adrift. Leknessund wore a black armband during the stage to honor the recently deceased King Harald V of Norway.

In the battle for the overall classification, Slovenian star Tadej Pogacar demonstrated his strength by accelerating in the final kilometers. He gained six seconds on Felix Gall and 16 seconds on Enric Mas, who remains second in the general classification, nearly four minutes behind Pogacar.

Pogacar downplayed any frustration with other teams' pace changes, stating, "I wasn't angry. I would have liked to reach the finish at my teammates' pace, but Decathlon set the pace, I followed Felix Gall, I saw the gap widening and I collaborated with him. I was able to gain a small advantage. It was a normal day, without any surprises."

The stage also saw strong performances from two Colombian cyclists, Juan Felipe Rodríguez Contreras and Iván Sosa, who finished fifth and sixth respectively, highlighting the diverse international competition in the race.
