Lemuria ‘Ambassador’ Refuses Police Check, Claims Immunity and Is Arrested

A driver stopped on Chile’s Route 5 Norte tried to avoid a police check by invoking diplomatic immunity from a country that does not exist. He told Carabineros that he belonged to the embassy of the so-called Republic of Lemuria.

The incident took place around midday near kilometer 20, toward Santiago, while officers from the Lampa Highway Police Station carried out a preventive patrol. They noticed a car displaying license plates that did not match those used by accredited diplomatic vehicles in Chile.

When officers stopped the vehicle, the driver said police could not inspect him because he was part of a diplomatic corps. Captain Eduardo Oyarce said the man claimed to belong to “the embassy of a fictitious republic that he said was called Lemuria.” He refused to hand over his Chilean identity card and repeated that his alleged diplomatic status protected him from the check.

Carabineros arrested him on allegations of concealment and identity usurpation and took the case to the Lampa station. Police identified him as a Chilean citizen around 50 years old, rather than a foreign diplomat. The vehicle had not been reported stolen, but its documents had expired and its license plate was false. The man had no criminal record, and prosecutors will decide how the case proceeds.

Lemuria began as a 19th-century scientific hypothesis about a lost landmass between Madagascar and India. Scientists later rejected the idea after the development of continental drift and plate tectonics. The name survived in occult traditions and fantasy literature as a mythical lost continent, like Atlantis.
