Leona Maguire selected as wildcard for European Solheim Cup team

Irish golfer Leona Maguire has secured a wildcard spot on Europe's team for the upcoming Solheim Cup, captain Anna Nordqvist announced.

Really excited, it’s a very strong European team, it’s a really great event and such a fun week. I’m fortunate to have been part of three of them already, hopefully this one is just as much fun as all of the rest of them.

This selection marks Maguire's fourth consecutive appearance in the prestigious team event, which pits Europe against the United States. Her inclusion comes despite a season where she has reportedly struggled for form. However, her exceptional performance record in previous Solheim Cups, boasting a 7-2-1 win-loss-tie record, was a decisive factor in Nordqvist's decision.

Maguire expressed her excitement about the event, stating, "Really excited, it’s a very strong European team, it’s a really great event and such a fun week. She added her fondness for matchplay and team golf, noting the unique atmosphere where "it’s not about money, it’s just for pride."

Captain Nordqvist lauded Maguire, referring to her as "MVP" since the last Solheim Cup. Maguire will be joined by rookies Julia López Ramirez, Nastasia Nadaud, and Mimi Rhodes as wildcard selections, complementing the already qualified team members.
