Leonel Fernández Denounces "Chaos" at Dajabón Market, Cites "Haitianization"

Former Dominican President Leonel Fernández has denounced the "total chaos" and perceived lack of hygiene at the Dajabón binational market. Fernández, leader of the Fuerza del Pueblo party, described the market's current state as a "Haitianization of commerce" that projects an image inconsistent with the country.

Fernández, speaking after touring the border area, expressed concern that the market's disorganization and deterioration obscure the Dominican identity. "We cannot allow, on the Dominican side, a Haitianization of commerce, because that is a huge step backward. You get there and it doesn't look like the Dominican Republic; it looks like a piece of Haiti in the Dominican Republic," he stated.

To address the situation, Fernández proposed that a future government implement an integral plan to reorganize the border market. This plan would focus on improving its functionality and creating a more orderly environment for both merchants and visitors. Key elements would include urban planning, adequate infrastructure, organized commercial spaces, and enhanced hygiene and sanitation conditions.

During his visit, audiovisual surveys were conducted to serve as a basis for architects and specialists to develop a transformation project. He also reiterated the need for modernizing border controls and maintaining a firm policy against illegal immigration.
